MOM AND SON WALKING THE BEACH |
Phyllis and I realized that we really did not know where the beaches were in PSL. We had been so busy with the move here and setting up the house then the holidays, we had not had a chance to explore much.
We are living on a peninsula so we knew there were beaches somewhere close by but to make it even easier we went to Hutchinson Island. Guessing we could not help but see a beach on an island, we did. We stumbled across BathTub Beach at about 5PM. We could see a long beach with people fishing and walking. We grabbed our cameras and tripods and started walking. Bathtub beach is a living reef and was closed during part of last year for dune restoration. (Below is part of an article talking about the beach, it was written by Mark Perry in the TCPALM Web page)
"Part of the reef is exposed at low tide and forms a calm, shallow area between the reef and the beach, much like a “bathtub,” so that’s how it got the name “Bathtub Reef.” When we say the word “reef,” we normally think of a coral reef and visualize the Florida Keys or Bahamas with beautiful corals making a virtual forest of underwater habitat for lobsters, sea urchins and colorful tropical fish. The Bathtub Reef is also a natural, living reef, providing habitat to aquatic plants and animals. The reef is constructed by amazing marine animals very different than the tiny coral polyps who build coral reefs. The reef is built by the Sabellariid (Sa-bell-AIR-id) worms, specifically Phragmatopoma caudata. That’s right, worms! These amazing marine worms are only about an inch long, but start out as tiny, free-swimming animals in the turbulent surf zone of the Atlantic Ocean shoreline. "
It is a great little beach and we really enjoyed seeing and photographing it and meeting the friendly people.
